Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Lyrics from The Sound of Music
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things
Without thinking of Maria, the captain, and the children, I can’t type the lyrics from my most loved movie. Now I’m singing in my head.
I’m sharing my favorite things from 2023. You may discover something to enjoy.
- FaceTime/Zoom – These technologies were invaluable when I joined my husband while he was working out of state. FaceTime allowed me to watch the marriage proposal to my oldest grandaughter virtually. Zoom enabled me to continue my counseling and discipleship ministries from a distance.
- Inductive Bible study of Colossians – Colossians has long been dear to me and holds a spot in my roadmap. You can find more about my roadmap HERE. But what makes the list is that the Lord so graciously allowed me to lead this study of my favorite book of the Bible with sisters in Christ.
- Romans 5:3-5 – This favorite passage has been my go to in a year of pain and suffering. You can read it alongside Romans 8:25-30 to understand why.
- Fix Your Eyes by Amy Gannett – I read four books authored or co-authored by female theologians this year. Gannett’s was by far my favorite, although I found value in all of them. You can find out more about Fix Your Eyes HERE.
- Things Unseen – A short little daily podcast, Things Unseen, was this year’s favorite. You can find it HERE.
- Challies.com – Tim Challies is a father, husband, and elder of Grace Fellowship Church in Toronto. He has written several books, including Seasons of Sorrow, which walks through a year of grief. Challies blog is published daily and includes his thoughts and experience. The blog also links readers to Kindle deals that I found helpful.
- Swan Creek Candle Co. – My favorite candle comes in various scents. I find mine at a local pharmacy or gift store across the river.
- Cranberry Chicken – This new favorite recipe is one I adapted for 16 people. The original recipe pan sears and roasts the chicken, but my adaptation pan sears and bakes with additional chicken broth. I served it over long-grain rice with slivered almonds. You can find the original recipe HERE.
- Jamaican Me Crazy – A dear friend gave me this coffee. This blend is available at the kitchen store of my local mall.
- Revlon Colorstay Ultimate – I tried more than a few before finding my favorite lip stain. The colors last, and the applicator works nicely for me. I found this product at my local market.
- Kenra Curl Defining Creme – My curly-haired daughter recommends my favorite hair product. It is available for purchase from a professional hair salon. Still, sometimes, I fnd it on the shelves at Walmart.
Comments are open for this post, and I would enjoy hearing from you. What are your favorite things?

1. Inductive study of Titus done by the women in our church…and my small group, who has read and studied and come prepared to share each week. I’m looking forward to doing I John with them next semester.
2. _Growing Together_ by Melissa Kruger – we did this over the summer in very small groups, specifically to encourage relationships, transparent sharing, and discipleship among our women. Such a good book for that!
3. The Home Edit 8-piece Multipurpose Edit (at WalMart) -clear storage bins in varying sizes; I bought four sets for my own home and then gave a set to each of my closest friends as a gift.
4. Rechargeable electric candle lighter – basically, a tiny taser that lights candle wicks. Love. It. I don’t have to search for a “regular” lighter or matches ever again.
5. Spaghetti and meatballs in the InstaPot for after a long day at work, after volleyball games
