The apostle Paul stands as a remarkable example of perseverance. Despite enduring beatings, imprisonment, false accusations, and unimaginable hardships, he passed on his wisdom to Timothy, showing great courage until the end of his life. Paul’s bravery was intentional and divinely inspired, requiring immense courage and complete reliance on God. In moments that demand courage, God strips away everything we cling to, reminding us that Christ is truly sufficient. Regardless of life’s circumstances, we find ultimate comfort in God himself, shaping our pursuits and prayers.
"Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant? If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying." - 2 Corinthians 11:25-31
Personally, I find it most challenging to maintain active hope, especially when overwhelmed by fatigue, whether physical or due to life’s obstacles. However, I hold onto the invaluable knowledge of God’s unwavering faithfulness in my life and the lives of other believers. This surpasses any concerns and deepens my love and trust in Jesus. Our purpose remains unchanged, even amidst shifting circumstances.
While we stand on the promises of Scripture, our ability to do so depends on our love and trust in the God who made those promises. Rejoicing in God’s grace and peace surpasses any human concept of fairness. It’s a privilege to use our lives to guide others toward Christ. Despite life’s challenges, aligning our path with God, relying on His grace, cherishing His mercy, and holding onto hope for eternity allows us to become our best selves.
Like Paul’s experiences, life can often feel like an intricate obstacle course. As believers, we are called to persevere. The true test lies not in finding joy after the trial but in discovering joy within the trial and affirming that everything God does is right and good. Finding solace in Scripture, I currently draw comfort from the life of Paul. Our ultimate goal is to please the Lord (2 Cor. 5:9), and how we finish holds the utmost value.
"For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing." - 2 Timothy 4:6-8
