An Everyday Theologian

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?’ For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. – Romans 11:33-36

Embracing the Journey of Theology

As someone who has always been captivated by theology, the deeper I delve into this field, the more I marvel at its vastness and intricacy. Most days, you’ll find me in my favorite chair, coffee mug in hand, with my laptop open and surrounded by numerous systematic theologies. One book that has been a constant companion on this journey is Dr. Gregg Allison’s Historical Theology, which has opened my eyes to the rich tapestry of our faith. It’s a journey of joyful discovery, and I warmly invite you to join me in exploring these profound depths.

I often turn to the works of esteemed theologians and seminary professors in my reading. These texts provide insight into church history and doctrine and delve into critical philosophical and theological explorations by influential thinkers like Aquinas and Augustine. Each page I read enhances my understanding and appreciation for the complexities of our Christian faith.

People often refer to me as a Bible teacher, counselor, and mentor. Yet, at my core, I see myself as merely an everyday theologian. Allow me to share my story so you can understand my perspective.

My Story

At age 56, I was in a Fort Worth, Texas, classroom surrounded by a diverse group of eager young minds ready to unpack advanced theological concepts. With my pen in hand, I felt excitement and humility as I realized the immense wealth of knowledge available.

Despite decades of dedicated Bible study and faithful church involvement, I discovered significant gaps in my theological understanding as I encountered ancient truths. This revelation was humbling, yet it sparked a conviction: I needed further education. By God’s grace, I enrolled at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

My understanding of Christianity, deeply rooted in my childhood faith, underwent a profound transformation. This formal education didn’t just fill gaps; it marked the most enriching period of my life. As I immersed myself in biblical doctrines, the focus of my life shifted dramatically, and God’s purpose for me became crystal clear. This transformation journey is a testament to the power of theological education, and I hope it inspires and motivates you as much as it has inspired and motivated me.

As I mentor, counsel, and teach women, I continually stress the importance of thinking theologically. Grasping the sufficiency of Scripture is not just a theoretical exercise but an essential tool for navigating the complexities of everyday life. Our engagement with our faith is a constant expression of our theological understanding. The more we learn about God’s revelation, the more we are equipped, empowered, and confident to live for His glory.

Why We Need Theology

When we approach the Bible as Christians, we aim to learn more about God. In this process, we also gain insight into ourselves and the world. Since our understanding of God is rooted in His Word, systematic theology serves as a vital guide to comprehending how the various parts of Scripture relate to its overarching message.

A clear understanding of God’s greatness and mystery, along with His remarkable works, humbles us, exalts Him, and inspires us to worship Him more deeply. Nearly two thousand years of church history, built upon sound theology anchored in Scripture, allow us to grasp what we believe and why it matters.

We engage in theology whenever we think or speak about God, His will, or His works. Scripture is for our benefit, and God’s Word is a steadfast foundation of truth. By studying theology, we enhance our understanding of Scripture and learn to express what God has revealed. For those hoping to leave a lasting legacy of Christian faith, gaining, retaining, and sharing these theological truths with those we love is crucial.

Christian women are called to utilize their gifts and knowledge to uplift other women and children regardless of age. Older women, like myself, have a unique responsibility to teach and guide younger generations, following the directive outlined in Titus 2:3-5. I hope you see the significance of our relationship with an almighty, all-holy God.

As an Arkansas woman dedicated to my family, church, and community, I approach this calling with a humble heart. I recognize that God does not require my assistance to fulfill His perfect plan; I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Him for allowing me to participate in His work. Let’s continue to explore, learn, and grow in our faith, embracing the journey that theology offers us.

Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.
