Preach the Gospel to Yourself

One of the most critical disciplines in the life of a believer is the daily reminder of the sacrificial death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In a sense, we become preachers to ourselves.

First, you need some understanding of who God is and who you are. God is holy and although we are saints we are still sinners. If we are aware of even subtle sins in our lives, we must acknowledge those before God. Next, we allow God’s word to wash over us daily in the truth that convicts us, grows us, and sets us free. You might be asking, “How do I put this into practice?”

Remind yourself daily that God is holy:  He is absolutely pure, perfect and just. Sin cannot be in His presence.

Remind yourself daily of the problem: Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Isaiah 59:2

Remind yourself how once you were a slave to sin, lost and without hope. Remind yourself daily of God’s answer to that problem: 1 Timothy 2:5, 1 Peter 3:18, Romans 5:8, John 3:16

Remind yourself daily of what Jesus purchased for you:

  • Forgiveness – Jesus’ blood was shed to cleanse you from all your sin: past, present and future. You have been freed from the penalty and power of sin. (1 John 1:9)
  • Redemption – Jesus paid the ultimate price to free you from slavery to sin. (Ephesians 1:7)
  • Reconciliation – Jesus restored your relationship to God. (Romans 5:10)
  • Propitiation – Jesus satisfied God’s wrath by taking the penalty you deserved. (1John 2:2)
  • Justification – In God’s court, your sins were credited to His account, so you are declared not guilty. His righteousness was credited to you. (Romans 5:9)
  • Adoption – Jesus’ death purchased family status for every believer, and through him God has become your Father. (Ephesians 1:5)

Remind yourself daily and believe the promises of God: Psalm 103:10-12, Isaiah 1:18, Isaiah 53:6, Micah 7:19

Practical steps as you preach the gospel to yourself:

  1. Daily intake of God’s Word.
  2. Memorize scripture.
  3. Commit yourself to regular church attendance and doing life with a local body of believers.
  4. Listen to music with sound theology and doctrine.
  5. Read good books.
  6. Listen to trustworthy preachers and Bible teachers.
