In Romans Chapter Four, we have an example of Abraham’s trust in God’s promises despite adverse circumstances and seemingly impossible odds. This example encourages us not to waver in trust when we face challenges or when God does not seem to be present. God did not immediately fulfill the promise to Abraham, which further encouraged us to be patient. At the same time, we wait for God to renew or redeem our circumstances.
He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God could do what he had promised. - Rom 4:19-21
With God’s help, we can eliminate sinful (often bitter) attitudes and persevere amid adversity. In addition to reflecting on God’s Word, we should look around at those Christians who would be faithful today. Do you spend time with those who maintain unwavering integrity and faith? What do you see as their source of strength? Where does their life lead you?
As a true believer walks out her faith, she should lead you straight to the Bible, prayer, and Christ’s church. Ultimately, we need to not only read of those faithful believers in the past but also gain from observing today’s Christians who might help us stand firm in our present need.
What are you reading? Who are you watching? And second, with God’s faithful people, we can endure difficult times and flourish on the other side of life’s problems.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that your brotherhood is experiencing the same kinds of suffering throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. - 1 Pet 5:8-10
Unlikely and unworthy people continue to be rescued – God fulfills his promises!
